Snowflakes are often confused with snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) as they look almost identical. You can tell the difference between the two flowers by the fact that snowflakes have a green dot at the tip of each of its six petals, while snowdrops have dots on only three of its petals.

Summer snowflake (Leucojum aestivum) blooms in late winter/early spring, not in summer despite its name. It usually goes dormant by summer. Our summer snowflakes at The Cottage have been blooming each winter for over 20 years! The banana slugs like to munch on them, but the deer don’t. The soft chocolate scent they give off makes me hungry for a chocolatey beverage right now! Time to take a break.

A single Iris. The word means rainbow and it’s the flower of the Greek goddess Iris who is the messenger of Love. In the language of flowers Iris symbolizes eloquence. They’re native to the North Temperate regions of the world. The habitat of irises also varies a lot. Some irises grow in deserts, some in swamps, some in the cold far north, and many in temperate climates. This one pictured was growing in a spot where we often throw our clippings from the yard!

Daffodils (Narcissus). Nothing says spring like this perennial! These are arguably the finest and most valuable spring bulbs. They are long lived, they stand up to cold and heat, all thrive with virtually no further attention, and rodents and deer won’t eat them. The earliest recorded mention of Daffodils was around two or three hundred years B.C.! The exact origin of the name Narcissus is unknown, but it is often linked to a Greek word for intoxicated (narcotic) and the myth of the youth of that name who fell in love with his own reflection. Or, what we refer today as having a narcissistic personality. I would have to say these flowers do demonstrate a strong need for admiration, as daffodils often live longer than us! They keep going and going…
